Bitcoin options vs Nifty options: what changes for an Indian F&O trader
Since 2024 SEBI has made Nifty options bigger, rarer and stricter. Bitcoin options on Delta Exchange India run the other way: an expiry every day, trading around the clock, in small lots. Here is how the two compare.

The short answer
Bitcoin options vs Nifty options comes down to time, size and rules. Bitcoin options on Delta Exchange India trade 24/7, expire every day at 5:30 PM IST and come in 0.001 BTC lots, about ₹6,800 of Bitcoin. Nifty options expire weekly on Tuesday, trade on weekdays only, and one lot is worth ₹15–20 lakh. Nifty is the deeper market and its tax is settled; crypto F&O tax is not. Most Nifty traders add Bitcoin options rather than switch.

1 Apr 2025
Position limits checked during the day, not only at the close.
7 Jul 2025
SEBI: nearly 91% of individual F&O traders lost money in FY25.
Sep 2025
Nifty's weekly expiry moves from Thursday to Tuesday.
Jan 2026
Nifty's lot falls from 75 to 65 units, keeping its value inside SEBI's range.
3 Aug 2026
A closing auction starts in the cash market; F&O trades until 3:40 PM.
20 Aug 2026
SEBI study: 87.7% of individual F&O traders lost money in FY26.
7 Dec 2026
Index F&O trades until 3:45 PM; contracts expiring that day stop at 3:30 PM and settle on the last 30 minutes of the cash market.
These rules cover equity derivatives on Indian stock exchanges. Crypto F&O on Delta is outside SEBI's remit.

Why Nifty traders are adding Bitcoin options
Since November 2024, SEBI has reshaped Nifty options to cool expiry-day speculation. Each exchange may now offer weekly options on one benchmark index only, and NSE kept Nifty. A new index contract must be worth at least ₹15 lakh, option buyers pay the premium upfront, and short options carry an extra 2% margin on expiry day. From September 2025 Nifty's weekly expiry moved to Tuesday, and since January 2026 a lot is 65 units.
The result is one weekly Nifty expiry, a bigger ticket and stricter margins, in a market open only on weekday hours. Bitcoin options on Delta Exchange India run the other way: an expiry every day at 5:30 PM IST, trading 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and a lot of 0.001 BTC.
That does not make them a replacement. Nifty is the deeper market, regulated by SEBI, with a tax treatment that has been settled for years. Treat Bitcoin options as a second market: for the evenings, nights and weekends when Nifty is shut, and for a smaller ticket while you learn how crypto moves.
Lot size and what a trade costs
SEBI's rule is that one Nifty lot must be worth ₹15 lakh to ₹20 lakh when NSE reviews it. One Bitcoin contract on Delta is 0.001 BTC: about ₹6,800 of Bitcoin at 5 November 2026's price of $80,142, at Delta's fixed ₹85 a dollar. A Nifty lot is more than 200 times larger.
Those are contract values, not the margin you put up. Margin on Delta depends on the contract, your leverage and Delta's risk settings, and the order form shows it before you place the trade, so we do not quote a rupee figure.
Delta charges 0.01% of the contract's value per order during its "Options Carnival" offer, and never more than 3.5% of the premium (0.03% and 10% after the offer), plus 18% GST. An option that expires worthless pays no settlement fee, and there is no securities transaction tax. Nifty trades pay brokerage, exchange fees, STT and GST: SEBI counted about ₹25,000 crore of such costs paid by individual traders in FY26.
Money moves in rupees. You deposit by UPI or bank transfer, contracts are priced in dollars, and profit or loss lands in your balance at the fixed ₹85 a dollar, so the rupee's own moves do not touch your result.
Work out the fee on your own trade with the charges calculator.
Volatility, settlement and the 24-hour clock
Bitcoin moves more than Nifty, and option prices show it. Delta's own comparison page puts typical implied volatility at about 15% for Indian equity indices and 50% for Bitcoin. On 5 November 2026, Delta priced its at-the-money Bitcoin options for 27 November at about 34%: below Delta's "typical", and still more than twice the equity figure. Richer premiums pay an option seller more, and a move against the seller arrives faster.
Both markets now settle on an average, not on one last tick. Delta settles every Bitcoin option in cash at 5:30 PM IST against a 30-minute time-weighted average of its index. From 7 December 2026, Nifty's expiring contracts stop trading at 3:30 PM and settle on the index worked out from its stocks' volume-weighted prices over the last 30 minutes of the cash market.
The clock is the biggest change. Nifty shuts every evening and weekend, so news lands as a gap at the next open. Bitcoin trades through the night, so there is no gap, but there is no break either: a position stays live while you sleep. Use stop orders, or an algo that watches for you, before you hold a short option overnight.
Liquidity: deep enough for a retail ticket
Volume is where Delta Exchange India stands apart. In the 24 hours to 2:56 AM on 5 November 2026, its public market data showed $8.41 billion of futures and options traded, the largest published crypto F&O volume of any rupee exchange in India. Its Bitcoin and Ether options alone traded $3.66 billion, 2.2 times Binance's $1.66 billion in the same window.
Nifty is the bigger market by far: SEBI notes that India trades index options at very high levels compared with other markets. What matters for a retail lot, though, is the cost of getting in and out.
We measured that on our own orders. Over the 90 days to 4 November 2026, our engine's Bitcoin option orders 3–7 days from expiry, live and on paper at Delta's best bid or ask, filled a median 1.3% of the option's price away from the mid. On expiry day that rose to 4%. Ether options were thinner, at 3% for 3–7 days. Sell a day or more out, prefer Bitcoin to Ether, and use limit orders near 5:30 PM.
Tax and regulation: where Nifty is ahead
Profit from Nifty F&O on a recognised stock exchange is non-speculative business income, taxed at your slab rate. A loss can be set off against other income except salary, and carried forward for eight years. The Income-tax Act, 2025 kept that treatment from 1 April 2026.
Crypto F&O is not settled. Delta's help centre says its futures and options are not virtual digital assets, so the 30% VDA tax does not apply and profit is taxed at your slab rate; it deducts no 1% TDS on F&O. The income-tax department has not ruled on crypto derivatives, and a cautious reading taxes them at a flat 30% as virtual digital assets, with no set-off for losses. Keep Delta's statements, and have a chartered accountant file your return.
Regulation differs too. SEBI regulates NSE, your broker and every Nifty contract. Delta Exchange India is registered with FIU-IND (VA00041101) under India's anti-money-laundering law, but crypto products are not regulated like securities, and there may be no regulatory recourse if something goes wrong.
What SEBI's loss data says, and what it does not
SEBI's latest study covers individual traders in equity F&O in FY26. 87.7% of them lost money, the average loss was about ₹1.17 lakh, and about 92% of all their losses came from options. 59% of index option turnover was in contracts expiring that same day.
Option sellers did better on one measure and far worse on another. In SEBI's sample of 5,050 traders, those who mostly sold options were the only group with a positive median return on capital in FY26, at +1%, and 44% of them lost money, against 90% of traders who only bought options.
Now the caveat SEBI attaches. The sellers who lost, lost about ₹51.7 lakh each on average, more than 11 times the ₹4.6 lakh of mostly-buying traders who lost, and sellers as a group still made a net loss. SEBI says the lower loss rate must be weighed against those much bigger losses. Mostly-sellers were also only about 2% of traders, and SEBI calls the sample's results indicative.
This is equity data; we know of no comparable study of crypto F&O. Nothing about Bitcoin makes the same-day trap smaller: daily expiries offer it every day. Size small, define your risk before you enter, and decide your exit before the trade, not during it.
How to add Bitcoin options to a Nifty routine
Start with what you already know. The option chain, the Greeks and spreads work the same way; what changes is the hours, the size and the speed. How to trade Bitcoin options in India walks through a first trade, and daily or weekly expiry helps you pick one.

- 3
Trade one lot, with defined risk. Sell a spread rather than a naked option, so the most you can lose is known before you enter.
- 4
Go easy on expiry day. Crossing the spread cost our engine's fills a median 4% of the premium on expiry day, against 1.3% at 3–7 days. Use limit orders.
- 5
Keep every statement. Crypto F&O tax is unsettled, so your records are your defence. Have a chartered accountant file.
Questions
Bitcoin options vs Nifty options: your questions
Are Bitcoin options better than Nifty options?
Neither is better for everyone. Bitcoin options on Delta trade 24/7, expire daily and come in 0.001 BTC lots; Nifty options are deeper, SEBI-regulated and taxed under settled rules. Many Nifty traders keep Nifty and add Bitcoin options for evenings and weekends.
What is the lot size of Bitcoin options on Delta Exchange?
0.001 BTC per contract, about ₹6,800 of Bitcoin at 5 November 2026's price; Ether is 0.01 ETH. A Nifty lot is 65 units, worth ₹15–20 lakh under SEBI's rule. Delta's lot sizes, explained.
When do Bitcoin options expire on Delta Exchange India?
Every day at 5:30 PM IST, with weekly expiries on Fridays and monthly ones on the last Friday. Each settles in cash on a 30-minute average of Delta's index. Expiry, explained.
Can I trade Bitcoin options on Saturday and Sunday?
Yes. Delta Exchange India is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends and Indian market holidays, and its daily options expire on weekends too.
Is Bitcoin more volatile than Nifty?
Yes, roughly twice as volatile on option prices. On 5 November 2026, Delta priced at-the-money Bitcoin options at about 34% implied volatility, while Delta's comparison puts Indian equity indices at about 15%. Bigger moves mean bigger premiums and faster losses.
How is profit from Bitcoin options taxed in India?
It is not settled. Delta treats crypto F&O profit as income at your slab rate, not 30% VDA tax, and deducts no TDS on F&O; a cautious reading applies 30%. Nifty F&O is non-speculative business income. Crypto F&O tax, explained.
Do I need to buy Bitcoin to trade Bitcoin options on Delta?
No. You deposit rupees, every contract settles in cash, and profit or loss lands in your rupee balance at Delta's fixed ₹85 a dollar. You never hold the coin.
Why did SEBI change Nifty options?
To cut expiry-day speculation and protect individual traders: SEBI found 93% of them lost money in F&O between FY22 and FY24. It limited weekly expiries to one index per exchange, raised the lot value to at least ₹15 lakh and added expiry-day margin.
